"We have only one rule here - to act like a gentleman at all times." - Robert E. Lee

About this web site

Confederate Colonel is an online community of those striving to live the life of the Southern Gentleman or Southern Lady in today's world. Also included is Southern Agrarianism. We follow the words of Robert E. Lee when he said, "We have only one rule here - to act like a gentleman at all times."

This web site and forum is owned and operated by Stephen Clay McGehee. The photo shown here is of William Pelham McGehee and his wife, Sarah. William Pelham McGehee served in the Confederate Army in the Washington Artillery. He answered his nation's call at the age of 17 to serve, and joined in the final years of the war. He was captured at the battle of Petersburg and held at the federal prison at Point Lookout, Maryland. Upon release, he returned to his native Alabama to farm and raise a family. William Pelham McGehee simply did his duty, and as the Southern Gentleman does, he did it quietly and without fanfare. William Pelham was the first cousin of Lt. Colonel John Pelham and the great-grandfather of Stephen Clay McGehee, founder and owner of the Confederate Colonel web site. Another McGehee connection to the Confederate States of America is the Hon. John C. McGehee of Madison County. He presided over the convention which drafted the Ordinance of Secession with which Florida formally withdrew from the union on January 10, 1861

The forum section of Confederate Colonel went on line September 22, 2007 and is powered by vBulletin software.

How did the name "Confederate Colonel" come about?

The idea of the name Confederate Colonel came after receiving the title of Kentucky Colonel on September 30, 2004 by Governor Ernie Fletcher and Secretary of State Trey Grayson in recognition of service following the hurricanes that swept through Florida earlier that year. The name "Confederate Colonel" combines the two key points represented by this forum - The South, and the honorable code of the Southern Gentleman. The title of Colonel is a custom observed in several Southern states.

More about our family and the Confederacy

After the death of William Pelham McGehee, his widow, Sarah, moved to Tampa, Florida. Below is a letter that accompanied her Confederate Veteran's pension check. Looking back on that time (1933), it is hard to imagine a public official writing such a letter today. We hope you enjoy reading this letter as much as we do.

P.O.W. Release for William Pelham McGehee. A copy of this document is in the museum at Point Lookout, Maryland. The original is in the McGehee private collection.

This document also served as a free pass for any public transportation. The bearer had but to show the document, and he was allowed to ride free of charge. This is part of the system devised to get the Confederate prisoners back home following their release.
